My Review
Master storyteller Author Hannah Mary McKinnon returns following Sister Dear (2020) with a dark and twisted tale— YOU WILL REMEMBER ME. Trust me, you will remember this psychological thriller and its maze of juicy secrets and lies.
“Diabolical, twisted, and cleverly crafted— well-developed characters and an unpredictable ending make this one totally irresistible. A wicked cat-and-mouse triangle—which one will be left standing in the end?”
How can you trust anyone when you can't trust yourself?
Forget the truth.
Remember the lies.
Jack Smith wakes up on the beach early one morning in Maryland with amnesia after sustaining a head injury.
His girlfriend, Lily, is waiting on him for their special breakfast, and he does not show. She is desperate to find him.
With the help of Jack's landlord, they try to find him and realize he often goes to the beach, where they find his car. However, before they arrive, Jack has awakened and pulled toward Maine (his hometown) even though he does not know why.
Maya (estranged stepsister) to Asher has longed to see her brother again. When Jack turns up (really Asher), she is delighted. Yet, he cannot remember all the history and secrets that led him away in the first place.
(too bad for him since this is the place he tried desperately to escape in the first place).
Lily soon learns Jack is not the person she thought he was. What is he hiding or running from?
Lily hears about a man on TV news that shows up and thinks this may be Jack. She travels to Maine, where she comes face to face with stepsister Maya.
Maya is not excited about Jack's girlfriend showing up. She is jealous and manipulative. Lily does not trust her.
Jack slowly starts getting some of his memories back, and there is hope for Lily and Jack. Lily hopes he will remember their lives back in Maryland.
However, something is off with Maya. Something sinister and Lily gets concerned, but Jack wants everyone to get along.
What really happened in Maine all those years ago for Jack to escape under a new identity? Who is in danger? Who is the perpetrator? Who is the evil one?
Wow! What a ride. Hannah cleverly leads you down a twisted dark evil road with well-developed characters and riveting suspense, keeping you glued to the pages, not knowing what jaw-dropping hammer (or other tools or tricks in her bag) will drop next.
From past to present, a propulsive journey through a winding maze of secrets. Get this one on your list, thriller lovers! For fans of B.A. Paris, Mary Kubica, and Hank Phillippi Ryan.
On a side note:
My favorite new word: "Discombobulate." What a wild and crazy ride. Hannah, you have outdone yourself. On to the dark side—this character is pure evil (you notice I did not say the gender). Watch your back. The three are pretty messed-up. You will be guessing to the final explosive ending.
OMG! I could not sleep for many nights reading this one! My heart was pounding for days and nights. Love the dark humor. Fans of Mary Kubica's "Local Woman Missing" (5/4) will enjoy this one. You will get the connection. I think the sneaky manipulative characters should team-up.
I have read all her books, and I think this is my favorite! Be sure and tune in to Hank & Hannah show @firstchapterfun on Tues and Thursdays. Love these two gals!
A special thank you to MIRA and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
