Detective Billie Ann Wilde was a detective before coming to Cocoa Beach, FL. We learned briefly about this time in previous books; however, in the latest edition, IN HER GRAVE, her haunting past (one she has tried to put behind her) collides with the present, and someone is out for vengeance, putting everything Billie cares about in danger and jeopardy.

Billie is a breast cancer survivor. She was married to Joe for eighteen years, and they have three children. Charlene (17), William (15), and Zach (10) residing in Cocoa Beach, FL. She recently came out to the family as gay, asked for a divorce, and newly dating a long-time best friend and love of her life, (Danni) with twins, also getting a divorce. There has been much conflict between Joe and Billie regarding her dangerous line of work and time away from the kids and her cases putting them in harm's way. In this installment, Joe is fighting her for full custody, trying to prove she is an unfit mother. She is a fabulous detective, has a great heart, and a caring loving mother and loyal friend.

Charlie and Tommy - teens were going through the Haunted Jail Trail, full of skeletons, frightening monsters, ghosts, and zombies in the maze. As soon as he thought he had escaped the maze, a hand reached out and pulled him backward. Charlie was pulled back into the darkness in terror by a figure in a white mask with a knife. Charlie tried to scream. It was too late.
Tommy could not find Charlie in the maze as they got separated but knew he could not leave without him. Frantic, he went looking for him and found his lifeless body and had to get help.
Billie Ann was set for a date night when she received the call about a dead body at the haunted trail by the jail. A kid. A homicide. When she arrives on the scene she is shocked. It is her nephew!
Alternating from past to present (then and now), we learn how Betty, a diner waitress, met Officer Travis Walker, a cop. Her background and how she fell in love with the man whom the town respected. They soon married, and she wanted to have a baby but failed to do so. She looked up to this man, putting him on a pedestal, and refused to believe the evil things from rape and more he was involved in and continued to stand by him. He was her life, her rock, her partner in crime, and her soulmate. Then a boy comes into her world. Could this be her chance for motherhood?
Billie Ann is grief-stricken by the news of her nephew, her brother Peter's son. Of course, her boss removed her from the case since this was her oldest brother's son. But Billie will do whatever she can to help Peter, her brother.
There were hundreds of suspects and no eyewitnesses, no CCTV. Tickets were paid in cash. Billie thinks this was a killer with planning and experience. The worst kind and she was afraid this kind would kill again.
Billie will stop at nothing to find justice for her brother Peter. She has not seen him in years, and he looks nothing like the fun teen she grew up with. Then she gets a shocker, Peter has confessed to Charlie's murder.
She knows this cannot be correct and suspects he is covering for someone. Billie is determined to defend her brother as she knows he is not a killer. From sneaking into files and doing her own investigating work behind the scenes, in between her other cases, she finds a link between his other young son and the murder weapon. Then twins were attacked at a zoo. One died, and the other was in critical condition in the same fashion, so it could not be her brother. He was covering for someone.
A diversion. Then her worst nightmare —Billie gets a spine-chilling call from an unknown number that turns her blood cold. It is the cry of her own youngest son, Zach. The killer has taken him.
What does the killer want with her family? She must protect her son. Between getting kicked off the case, trying to find her nephew's killer to help her brother, locate her son, a killer, and her teen daughter likes a boy Tyler who is twenty-eight and way too old for her and could be dangerous, and her ex using Billie's job against her to get custody of the kids and possibly her house, so the stress is overwhelming. She definitely has to put dating and a relationship on the back burner, but Danni is very supportive.
Billie will need to put all her resources and strength into finding the vicious evil predator and determining his motives to try and stay one step ahead of him. As her haunted traumatic past meets the present, will Billie possess the strength and savvy to outsmart the killer and save her family and those she loves so dear?
My thoughts...
In her 100th novel, Rose raises her game as she does with every book. Intense, gripping, bold, multilayered, and highly emotional, IN HER GRAVE is compulsive reading, a first-rate crime thriller.
IN HER GRAVE is heart-pounding, taut, addictive, riveting suspense, and intense. Filled with dangers lurking with every page turn in a race against time to try and outsmart a sadistic killer and a woman blindly protecting him, even disbelieving her own sister.
Is someone out for revenge from her past, her cases or what is the connection? Billie Ann must pull out all the stops while working behind the scenes on her other cases and working with her team to protect her family from a monster.
The author skillfully keeps the suspense high with the alternating POVs from Betty (then-chilling) to Billie Anne (now) and someone named Andy for a few chapters. You do not know how the storylines will collide or connect, but you are in for the long haul. IN HER GRAVE is another unputdownable thrill ride I read in one sitting. Set aside the time as the author skillfully leads readers on a thrilling, spine-chilling journey into the past.
Rose pulls out all the stops in #3 for a nail-biting, emotional, gripping crime thriller that fans will devour. This is a top-notch detective crime series and a powerhouse author! I highly recommend this series and read them in order as you do not want to miss a thing. I cannot wait for #4!
On a personal note...
As a fellow Floridan, I was drawn to the first book in the Detective Billie Ann Wilde series, which was also the first book I read by Willow Rose. I would love to see a TV series developed based on this series! It would be killer.
I instantly enjoyed the author's captivating storytelling, plot twists, and the extraordinary detective series and well-developed relatable characters. A fan for life! Billie Ann Wilde is a fascinating character, and Rose writes compassionately, showing all sides of the detective, from her strong to her vulnerable side. A woman who loves life with many challenges. This one was difficult at the end for her and readers; however, here's hoping #4 will change things for Billie. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment to see if our favorite detective finally gets a little happiness she deserves before her next case. Rooting for her and Danni and the kids. I am in for the long haul and hope this series continues. It is too good to end.
Inspiration...
I love that the author shares the fascinating inspiration behind her novels, which she includes in her Authors' Note with links to those news articles. (this was a good one). I enjoy going down the rabbit hole. This adds depth to her books and enhances the overall reading experience. Her characters are well developed as she balances work, personal life, and family. Always expect some jaw-dropping plot twists from the queen! I highly recommend this author and the series!

DD Warren, Christina McDonald's Det Jess Lambert, Karin Slaughter's Will Trent, and Robin Mahle's Det Rebecca Ellis. Highly recommended to fans of the series and all readers who enjoy a fast-paced, dark suspense thriller, smartly written, an unstoppable heroine, great characterization, and a twisty plot.
