Sweet Magnolias meets Fixer Upper in this delightfully refreshing debut about a woman bravely chasing her dreams, building a life on her own terms, and maybe even discovering a second chance at love.
Magnolia "Mack" Bishop is staring down the barrel at single motherhood--thanks to an unsolicited personal picture her husband texted another woman that quickly went viral among every mom group in town. But she's determined to not let it distract her from the professional victory she's inches away from: securing Charleston's prestigious Historic Preservation Design Fellowship, the apple of every local designer's eye.
But when the final house tour is undone by a host of calamities, Mack's shot at the fellowship goes up in flames. Smelling blood in the water, Mack's mother, the original Magnolia Bishop, breezes in with a project lead--strings attached. If there's one thing Magnolia lives for, aside from maintaining her station atop the Southern social ladder, it's to control Mack's life . . . and that includes keeping the identity of the absentee father Mack never knew in the shadows.
While working for her mother is the professional equivalent of moving into one's parent's basement, Mack spots an opportunity to make it her own when a television network puts a call out for local designers. Pitching the home renovation TV pilot of her dreams--one with a historic preservation twist--might just be the way to finally prove herself. Still, she'll have to do it covertly to avoid her mother's interference.
Just when Mack finds her professional footing, at home she spots an impossibly familiar figure unloading his moving truck into the newly sold house next door. She is furious, floored, and regrettably flustered because Lincoln Kelly is the one who got away. Fifteen years earlier he was a summer romance she inadvertently fell in love with, and when he left, following his dreams to New York, Mack was broken-hearted.
Filled with characters who could step off the page and a reminder that nothing worth saving is beyond repair, this charming and delightful debut novel will resonate with readers of Southern women's fiction by Mary Kay Andrews and Kristy Woodson Harvey.

Welcome, Grace!
Behind the Book
Q. Give us your best ELEVATOR PITCH for SOUTHERN BY DESIGN.
When Mack Bishop’s historic home restoration business begins to struggle she has no choice but to team up with her ghastly mother on a project. It’s a match made anywhere but heaven, so Mack seeks out a reality show TV gig on the side as a chance to escape her mother’s suffocating hold. Second chance romance comes knocking when an old flame moves in next door. Family secrets unravel, and by the end Mack is certain that the things worth saving aren’t beyond repair.
Q. SETTING: Tell us more about the book setting and why you selected it.
Charleston, SC is one of my favorite cities on earth (possibly my all-time favorite, but I’m resistant to boxing myself in 😉. I went to the College of Charleston for undergrad, so I had the incredible privilege of living in the city, walking the cobbled streets, and running around the market street bars after hours. The architecture of the city is remarkable and truly one of a kind, so the stately, historic homes were much of the inspiration behind the book. I wondered about who lived in those homes, but even more so I wondered who took care of those homes? Who had the vision, the skill, and the tenacity to continually repair and maintain those centuries old coastal homes? Much of Mack’s character, her ability to see the possibility in things and try and try again was inspired by this concept.
Q. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Your favorite character to write, and/or most challenging?
This is an easy one. I adored writing Magnolia senior, mother to Mack. There’s something about writing an “unlikable” female character and knowing that by the end of the book she too would have her own arc and that redemption lay ahead. Yes, she is terrible and mean, and my heart breaks for Mack, but as we learn why Magnolia is that way she is, some room opens up for her to be more.
Q. WRITING: Do you have a favorite chapter or scene in the novel you enjoyed writing the most?
My favorite scene comes at the end of the book, following the “reveals”. It’s the moment Mack goes back to her mother after reading the letters. I don’t want to give any spoilers in case someone reading this hasn’t read the book yet, but this is the moment in the book both of the women come to fully see and understand each other and understand their complexities. I remember vividly writing the moment Mack reaches out and takes Magnolia’s sleepy face by the cheek, and my heart could’ve exploded. As much as I want to hate Magnolia Senior, I cannot help but feel for her too.
Q. TAKEAWAY: What important message, theme, or takeaway would you like readers to be left with when reading your book?
The most important theme is that second chances can be possible and powerful. Whether it’s a testy family relationship, a professional endeavor or yet another attempt at that hobby you’ve always dreamed of taking up, it’s worth giving it a chance. Even more so, for ourselves, when we’ve failed or fallen or lost our way, we’re worth reviving just like Mack does her beloved historic homes.
(*disclaimer: this does not include toxic or abusive relationships or any of the like. Those should never, ever receive a second chance.)
Q. CHARACTER: If you could be one of your characters for a day which characters would it be?
Fitz. He’s so funny and glamorous, I would love to just run around and live his life. His confidence and charm is infectious, and it would be fun to experience that for a day! Plus, the fashion would be fabulous too.
Q. UPCOMING: Can you share what you are currently working on or what is next in ten words or less (or more)?
It’s a two-book year for me! I’ll be releasing my sophomore novel in November 2025. It’s called Good Hair Days and is a modern take on Steel Magnolias. It’s a new cast this time, but the women have equal Southern sass and a few more tearjerking moments.
Fascintating! We cannot wait for your next novel. I concur, everyone should have a 'Fitz' for a friend. Readers, continue reading below for more up close and personal from Grace.

Behind the Author
CURRENT STATE?
Georgia, the suburbs of Atlanta.
YOUR FAVORITE SOUTHERN TIP, OR SOUTHERN DISH/CUISINE?
Fried green tomatoes—especially when they come with some sort of fancy jam or sauce.
YOUR FAVORITE SOUTHERN AUTHOR?
Dorothea Benton Frank. She was such an inspiration for me, and I started writing after I ran out of her books to read.
WHAT IS YOUR WRITING KRYPTONITE?
Days off school or sick kids. I need uninterrupted time to write, so when my children are around, and I’m responsible for them, it’s really difficult to make progress. I’ve gotten good at working in small chunks of time, but I have to be left alone! ☺
FAVORITE FOOD/DRINK?
Sweets, sweets, sweets. I’ve never met a baked good I didn’t love. Bonus points for chocolate.
FAVORITE HOBBY?
There are so many crafts I’ve explored and enjoyed! Currently I’m a cross-stitcher because it’s easy to pick up and put down without a ton of mess.
FAVORITE READING FORMAT?
Paperback girl all the way with hardcover as a runner up. I do use my e-reader sometimes, but I prefer a hard copy. I struggle with audio because even if I’m invested in the story, I have too many thoughts running through my head, and my mind wanders!
WHEN YOU RECEIVE A SPARK OF INSPIRATION FOR A BOOK:
I have two young children, so I typically can’t drop everything to write on a dime, but I’ll also forget it if I don’t write it down. I’ve often been caught out thinking, “what was that great idea I had?” if I don’t write it down. Sometimes it comes back, sometimes it doesn’t.
YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO WRITE?
My office. It’s a boring answer, but my brain shifts into work mode when I’m in there, and I’m overall much more focused.
IF YOU COULD ELIMINATE ONE THING FROM YOUR DAILY LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Grocery shopping and meal planning. Technically this is probably two things, but I abhor it. It would be heavenly to have a mind-reading personal chef who just produced the meals I was most craving. A girl can dream!
DESCRIBE ONE THING ON YOUR DESK, CURRENTLY?
Treasures from my children. My son has 3D printed me a few cute animals, little notes, and Mother’s Day crafts from my daughter.
WHICH DO YOU ENJOY WRITING MORE: DIALOGUE OR INTERNAL THOUGHTS?
Dialogue! I get antsy when I spend too much writing inside the character’s head, and then I have to bring someone else into the scene.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE WRITING?
If I’m drafting, I might, but I never do when I’m revising or polishing.
YOU WOULDN'T BE CAUGHT DEAD, WHERE?
Skiing. I tried it once—a promise made to my husband—and as I hypothesized, I was not built to slide down a slippery slope without brakes! If I went again, I’d be parked at the ski lodge with a book.
WHAT WOULD YOUR DAUGHTER (OR SON) SAY ABOUT YOU BEING AN AUTHOR, IF ASKED?
Son (7 - eldest child): “Mom, this is amazing! You wrote a whole book!”
Daughter (5 - the baby): “No offense, Mom, but I’m just really not into this.”
INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT?
Introvert. I love my time with people, but I get irritable without enough time alone.
YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A PARENT?
Having the privilege of watching them grow up and find themselves. Their own interests, their own opinions and their own delight. From when they were babies, I love the development of their personalities and seeing how they are unique. I in no way expect, need or desire for them to “follow after” my husband or me. They are fabulously them, and it’s a miracle to know they came from us. What a blessing.
FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR PARTNER?
My husband loves leaving Instagram comments on major retailer’s posts suggesting they promote my book, and every comment has a slew of fire emojis. I think he missed a calling in sales.
WHAT ARE YOU ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT?
It’s probably unsurprising given the topic of Southern by Design, but I love décor and design. In an extension, I also love visual arts of all kinds, especially original artwork. If I had more of a budget for it, I’d love to collect art.
ONE BIT OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE AN INSPIRING AUTHOR?
It’s ok to get it wrong. You have to get it wrong—and so many times—before you can get it right. There is no such thing as wasted words.
WHAT ARE EARLIER JOBS YOU HAD BEFORE BECOMING AN AUTHOR?
I was a clinical social worker. It’s a profession I’m so proud to have been a part of it. It’s challenging work, but especially in the current day and age it’s so important to have professionals out in the world who are validating and supportive of all people. I call myself a “forever social worker” because the values driving the training I received are ones ingrained in me forever.
PET PEEVE?
Tardiness. I am pathologically early.
BEST PART OF BEING AN AUTHOR?
The writing part. I feel most alive when I’m writing, whether that’s drafting, revising or nitpicking lines at the end.
GO TO A PARTY, OR A QUIET EVENING AT HOME?
Quiet evening at home.
WHAT AREA WOULD YOU LIKE ONE OF FUTURE BOOKS TO BE SET?
For now, all of my women’s fiction novels will be set in the American South.
IF YOU WERE NOT A WRITER, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CAREER?
I would love to be a painter, but I would need plenty more practice before I called it a career.
WHAT VILLAIN DO YOU FEEL FOR?
Magnolia Senior in Southern by Design 😉
These are so much fun. Thank you, Grace, for spending time with us today!

My Review
Grace Helena Walz dazzles with her captivating debut, SOUTHERN BY DESIGN, set in the stunning historic Charleston, South Carolina, where family secrets are unraveled and familial bonds are tested.
“A delightful Southern gem! Full of heart, soul, secrets, humor, and Southern charm. A captivating, impressive debut for fans of Dorothea Benton Frank and Kristy Woodson Harvey.”
We follow a woman who is courageously pursuing her dreams, striving to build a life free from her mother's control and ex-husband while on a quest to find her biological father. As she navigates a new TV design remodel show, a business, and single motherhood, she also grapples with the aftermath of past love and the possibility of a second chance at romance that was once stolen from her years ago.
About...
Magnolia "Mack" Bishop owns Bishop Builds, and they have lost their Charleston fellowship. On top of that, her husband, Grady Edgar Suffolk, III, sent an unsolicited personal photo to a woman that has caused an embarrassing stir in Charleston.
After kicking her unfaithful husband out of her life, Mack is entangled in a web of complex relationships. Her mother, an influential and controlling figure, is best friends with her ex's mother. This intricate network of connections, coupled with past betrayals, adds a layer of tension and drama to the story.
She dreads going to her mom for help with a new historical project, the prestigious Daniel House. At least she has her seven-year-old smart daughter, Hallie, who speaks her mind. She has impeccable taste and is the highlight of her life.
Mack's mother, the original Magnolia Bishop of Beaufort, SC, of privilege, has strings attached to any project. She is all about social status and loves to control Mack's life. Mack does not need someone to micromanage her team. Her mom sits on the Carolina Historical Society Board, and half of her friends are tied up in the Charleston Historic Preservation Board. So there you go.
Mack has never given up trying to find her biological dad, but her mom always brushes her off.
She and her team, Fitz, her right-hand man (love him), an old college friend, and her staff are invited to do a TV series to cover the renovation. This opportunity could be a game-changer for her business, but she must keep this a secret from her mom as long as possible, adding another layer of complexity to her already complicated life.
Amidst the excitement of the new show, Mack finds herself navigating the complexities of being a single mom, dealing with Grady's lack of involvement, and getting distracted by the new neighbor next door.
This new neighbor is Lincoln, her past love who moved to NYC for a photography career, and his young son, now her daughter's best friend. Their unexpected reunion adds a new layer of past feelings and spice to Mack's life.
Mack's life is far from ordinary between her controlling mom, the challenges of renovating a historical home, the TV show, her ex, trying to find her father, and the rekindling of past feelings.
However, when a tragedy strikes, the mystery of the past will resurface, not just for Mack but also for her mom, potentially altering their lives. This unforeseen twist will test their relationships and force them to confront their past, leading to a dramatic and emotional climax.
My thoughts...
Oh, how I loved this book! From the stunning front cover to the allure of the historic Charleson, from design, a home reno TV show- Holy City Flip, heartbreak, new beginnings, Southern sass, family secrets of the past, self-discovery, a new romance, and second chances—SOUTHERN BY DESIGN has it all!
Grace deftly explores the familial ties that bind us — and those that have the power to break us. Walz is a significant new voice in Southern fiction and the real deal, folks.
When the past and present converge, it is explosive, heartbreaking, and compelling. Grace pulls the reader into the hearts and souls of her characters with ample emotions, secrets, privileges (haves and have not), and consequences—showcasing the lengths they go to protect their families and friends.
I loved the mystery, the family secrets, the design elements, the show, the humor, the well-developed characters, and all the things we love about women's Southern fiction. It is an impressive debut, and I cannot wait to see what comes next!
This is a beautiful story for Valentine's and Mother's Day and an ideal choice for book clubs.

On a personal note: With a commercial design & architectural background, and later with website hotel and resort clients in Charleston for many years, I loved traveling there monthly to visit and spending time in this beautiful historical city. From the events, the history, the restaurants, food, shops, people, the atmosphere, charm, and architecture—it is one of my top Southern cities!
