Daniel Hurst's THE BOYFRIEND is an engaging twisty suspense thriller of obsession with a series of ex-boyfriends murdered with many red herrings and suspects.
Will the current fiancé Tom be next?
Adele Davies has had a colorful past with many boyfriends and lovers after traveling the world. She was also in a car crash when she was younger. She also hit her head when she was sixteen and does not remember everything.
She is finally ready to settle down with the love of her life Tom. They are planning their wedding, and she is a thirty-six-year-old accountant.
She has a great BFF, Nicola, she likes to go drinking with (she drinks a lot). When she is out with her friend one night, she learns her first boyfriend just committed suicide. She cannot even imagine him doing something like this. She attended the funeral because she knew his parents and his friends.
Next, it happened again. Each time was something different. At first, the deaths seem accidental, but soon a sinister pattern emerges. Adele’s former partners are being killed off in the order, she dated them.
In the meantime, she and Tom are trying to plan a wedding, and things are tense between them with all the ex-boyfriends being murdered. She also has a venue picked out for the wedding, and her old friend (estranged), Rachel, works there as a wedding planner, and she does not trust her.
Adele begins receiving texts with warnings about how many left to go. When the count gets to 5 and going on six, her current fiance and live-in boyfriend is next.
Thus far, killings in order of dating them.
Shaun Gibson - Her first boyfriend. Death: Suicide.
Calum Jenkins. Second boyfriend, from University. Death: Car Accident.
Three down. Three to go.
Ryan Harris. Boyfriend at age 25. New Zealand. Death: House fire.
She only has two more exes. Ash and Jesse, but her sixth boyfriend is her current one. Tom will be last. These deaths aren't random. They are planned. They are not over.
Ash Sweeney. Death: Attacked.
Jesse Addams: Last boyfriend before Tom at age 30. (violent one and went to prison) Death: Stabbed to death.
One to go. The cops even tried to arrest Tom.
We also hear from THE BOYFRIEND POV. The creepy no-name guy. The killer. He is watching. NO NAME
Tom thinks she is crazy and drinks too much. The police PC Brown does not take her seriously and until it gets to Tom. Tom is knifed and winds up in the hospital. Then they take it seriously. He is the last one.
Who could be doing this sinister act and killing off her exes? She has no clue to help the police. Jesse was the only violent one. It must be someone she knows, or how else would know about her past boyfriends unless on social media?
She feels like she should reach out and warn the rest.
From obsession to murder, will they discover the killer's identity before he gets to Tom? Will there be a wedding?
My first book by the author, Daniel Hurst, and look forward to reading more. A fun read to find out the motives behind the killings. Read/listened in one sitting.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Lorna Bennett and Chris Devon for an engaging and entertaining performance. I also purchased the e-book.
