Q. Give us your best ELEVATOR PITCH for THE LOST STORY?
I like to explain the book to readers by saying, “Imagine Narnia, fifteen years later.” The book explores what happens when a child who went to a portal fantasy world comes home to the real world and grows up. And of course, returns as an adult!
Q. DESCRIBE your novel in three words or less.
Unicorns! Mermaids! Magic!
Q. INSPIRATION: The spark that ignited the novel. Where were you when the idea came to you?
I tell this story in the Acknowledgements because it’s still so wild to me. I re-read The Lord of the Flies a few years ago and got obsessed with the question, “What happened to Ralph and Jack when they were adults?” But of course you can’t write a sequel to a book that isn’t in the public domain. So I gave up on the idea and put the book back on the shelf. It just so happens I put it next to my Chronicles of Narnia boxed set. I looked at both books and a lightbulb went off. I knew then I wanted to write the story of two boys who went to a fantasy world as children and then had to come back to Earth.
Q. C.S. LEWIS: What is your favorite C.S. Lewis book?
Gotta be the one that started it all—The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe. It stole my heart and still has it! But The Silver Chair is a close second.
Q. SETTING: Tell us more about the book setting and why you selected it.
There are three main settings in The Lost Story and they represent three different things. There’s a dark ghost town, which represents the world where parents reject their children. There’s the bright fantasy world which represents the world where families accept and love each other. And then there’s the real world which is a mix of both. The “real world” setting is West Virginia because it’s so beautiful and wild and magical. Even their license plates read, “Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.”
Q. RESEARCH: Any fascinating research for the novel, or anything you learned along the way?
My favorite research was simply making multiple trips to West Virginia. I learned the state is literally 70% tree-covered. Trees and mountains and yes, mysterious disappearances.
Q. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Your favorite character to write, and/or most challenging?
Jeremy was my favorite. I love a character who is willing to say what the rest of us only think. And you can tell I loved writing him. He gets most of the best lines.
Q. SERIES: Please tell us if there will be more books in a series.
I don’t know! I hope so!
Q. WRITING: Do you have a favorite chapter or scene in the novel you enjoyed writing the most?
The chapter where we go through Jeremy’s life in the form of a top ten list was the most fun I had writing.
Q. TAKEAWAY: What important message, theme, or takeaway would you like readers to be left with when reading your book?
You don’t have to go to a magic world to find beauty and love. The magic kingdom for Rafe and Jeremy isn’t Shanandoah. It’s each other.
Q. UPCOMING: Can you share what you are currently working on or what is next in ten words or less (or more)?
If The Wishing Game explored the reader fantasy of living with your favorite author and The Lost Story explored the read fantasy of living in your favorite book world, then my next book will explore the reader fantasy of actually meeting and getting romantically involved with your book boyfriend/girlfriend.

So many! But since we’re talking about The Lost Story, a fantasy novel, I’ll quote from my favorite fantasy novel, Peter S. Beagle’s The Last Unicorn:
Real magic can never be made by offering someone else’s liver. You must tear out your own and not expect to get it back.
This is good advice for artists, too.

Once upon a time, best friends Jeremy Cox and Rafe Howell mysteriously vanished in the Red Crow State Forest of West Virginia to a faraway enchanted land called Shenandoah.
They reappeared six months later, their return shrouded in a veil of inexplicability. They seemed to be healthy and nourished, but their silence about their whereabouts only deepened the mystery.
Then, fifteen years after their return, Jeremy is a famous investigator for missing persons. Rafe is a reclusive artist who lives in a cabin in the woods. He does not share his work. He had no visible scars or memory of what occurred while they were missing. Jeremy knows the truth behind their time in the woods, in a magical realm filled with beauty and danger. However, when vet tech Emilie Wendel hires Jeremy to find her long-lost half-sister, Shannon (who disappeared from the safe forest), Jeremy knows she was also in the hidden kingdom during their time in the forest.

THE LOST STORY is inspired by C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia; this wild and wondrous novel is a fairy tale for grown-ups who still knock on the backs of wardrobes.
Mysterious, magical, and memorable. Wildly imaginative, from the lush, vivid descriptions, memories, enchanting lyrical prose, humor, lovely metaphors, illustrations, literary references, music, art, and the magical and clever quotes between the chapters—the author draws you into this wildly imaginative world. Be prepared to be transported. Also included the yummy Golden Apple Christmas Cake Recipe (modified for this world).
Readers will be caught up in the adventures of the three delightful, well-developed main characters and the cast of complex supporting ones. Atmospheric, charming, mystical, and endearing! This may be your favorite adult fairytale.
Meg's writing is breathtaking, showcasing her imaginative storytelling talents.
