We are super excited and honored to have you join us today for our 3rd-year anniversary edition of An Elevator Ride with the Author Series! You were so kind to be the first author interview back in August of 2018 and this is your third time back. Many thanks! Your support means the world and all the great work you do connecting authors and readers. Wow! You have been quite BUSY this past year and this pandemic has not slowed you down at all. In addition to being an acclaimed bestselling author of 13 thrillers, winning the most prestigious awards in the genre: five Agathas, four Anthonys, and the coveted Mary Higgins Clark Award. Plus, being an on-air investigative reporter for Boston’s WHDH-TV, with 37 Emmys and dozens of journalism honors, you are now hosting several popular online weekly LIVE literary shows! Q. Please share with our readers about some of your new online popular shows? HANK: Isn’t it crazy? And so much fun. Who would have thought my 40 years in television was all to prepare me for this? Love it. First Chapter Fun, the brainchild of the brilliant Hannah Mary McKinnon, is a twice-weekly live show on Instagram and Facebook on @FirstChapterFun. It is such a joy! Every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:30 PM ET, Hannah and I read out loud live the first chapter of a brand new book. We have done almost 200 shows so far! So that is a total of 200 first chapters — and about the same number of authors--that we have introduced readers to. And they are all archived, so if you miss the live broadcast, you can watch the videos. It is so much fun. We call it like sampling a box of book chocolates! You never know what wonderful thing you’re going to hear. The Back Room is also quite amazing. It is a twice-monthly live zoom panel of four incredible authors. How in the heck do you have time to write and do everything you do?
HANK: Oh, I am laughing! I have no idea. May I just say… One step at a time. I so embrace and enjoy it all, and yes, I will admit to you that sometimes it seems like a lot. And other times I understand that I am the luckiest person in the world. I simply…have a lot of lists! (And it is so much fun to cross things off. Sometimes I add things I’ve done that weren’t on the list just so I can check them off.) As a huge fan, we are super excited about your latest psychological thriller everyone is talking about – HER PERFECT LIFE. We cannot wait to learn more. Let us dive in! Q. Describe HER PERFECT LIFE in three words or less?
HANK: Twisty. Surprising. Heartbreaking.
Q. INSPIRATION: The spark that ignited HER PERFECT LIFE? Where were you when the idea came and any inspiration for the novel?
HANK: I worked in Atlanta, in the 80s, as the weekend anchor for the CBS affiliate. One Saturday I came home after the late news, around midnight or even later, and my house was surrounded by police cars. Someone had broken into my house! The police caught the guy, and he confessed to them that he had chosen my house to rob because he knew that since I was live on television, I wasn’t at home. Isn’t that chilling?
Because he knew where I was, he knew where I wasn’t. That understanding of the deep vulnerability of being a television reporter haunted me. SO scary! And that was the beginning of the story.
How can you ever feel safe when the spotlight is always on you? How can you keep a secret when everyone is watching everything you do? Fame sounds like a wonderful thing, but maybe, when you have it, you realize the price you pay.
And that led to the irony in the title. Because of course, though sometimes it seems that way to others, no one has a perfect life.
Q. SETTING: Share with us the book setting (s) and your favorite thing about the area and why you selected it?
HANK: I have been a television reporter in Boston for 40 years now, crazily enough, and the book is set in Boston. It is so much fun to explore Boston and Massachusetts by way of this book! I’ll be driving, for instance, and think, Oh! this is where Lily worried she was being kidnapped! And then I think--no I made that up for the book.
Plus, it’s always fun to talk about Boston drivers.

Q. CHARACTERS: What great in-depth character development! Tell us a little about these two sisters, Lily, and Cassie. And how much fun was it creating little Rowen?
HANK: Older sister Cassie: Headstrong, typical first-child, knows what she wants, and is supremely self-confident when she goes off to college. And then something happens, and she disappears.
Younger sister Lily: just a child when Cassie disappears, has spent every day since then looking for her. Why can’t she find out what happened to her?
Lily has become a terrifically successful television reporter, always in the spotlight. But in the back of her mind, she is looking for Cassie. When she is given certain information–– which I won’t discuss here ––she begins to wonder whether it might be better if Cassie stayed away. What if revealing Cassie’s secret ruins Lily’s perfect life? And that’s a tough decision for Lily, whose entire existence, in these days of constant social media scrutiny, depends on keeping her perfect reputation.
And oh, little Rowen. One of my favorite characters ever. Her voice just emerged, I have to admit, and she was a joy to write. Poor little thing? She is making the best of an unusual life. And probably has no idea of how hard her mother Lily is working to protect her from the spotlight. Q. WRITING: IN HER PERFECT LIFE you explore the shocking depths each character will go to keep their secrets buried both past and present with three different POVs (Lily, Cassie, and Greer) while building to an explosive finale with many plot twists and turns along the way. What was your favorite character to write (and/or) the most challenging? HANK: Oh, I have to confess: in this particular book, they were all somewhat difficult! Everyone has a secret, and everyone is trying to find them out. How far would we go to get what we want, and how much would we risk–– knowing it’s incredibly risky-- to find the only thing you’ve ever really wanted? It’s also difficult to write about fame because, in these days of relatability, we do not always feel connected to famous people. In fact, often, we want them to fail, right? There’s often an element of envy, or jealousy, or some sort of feeling that they shouldn’t be where they are. And that it is whiny to complain about it.
So how do I make Lily a lovely engaging person? An authentically devoted mom, and a hard-working journalist? All she wants is to find her sister––but she needs to protect herself and her daughter from the relentless spotlight. And what if what she wants is the worst thing that could possibly happen?
It was also complicated because we learn about Lily from Lily, of course, but we also learn about Lily from Greer. The hardworking, ambitious, laser-focused Greer. And which one is right about the kind of person she is?
I love that HER PERFECT LIFE became a cat-and-mouse game. But which character is the cat and which character is the mouse? Q. TOPICS: Name three themes or topics addressed in HER PERFECT LIFE?
HANK:
- The complicated relationship of sisters.
- The balance of career and family.
- The power of guilt.
- How destructive it is to try to be perfect.
- How dangerous it is in the spotlight.
- And that no one tells a secret without a reason.
- Oh, that’s six. 🙂
Q. AUTHOR/TV INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER: Since you play both roles and always looking for a story, and your character Lily is also a successful TV investigative reporter— have you ever had a stalker or someone offering you mysterious news tips, like Mr. Smith? Oh, and do tell, about your relationship with your producer? (I guess that is more than one question, and we are getting a little too personal here) 😘 HANK: Well, I have had stalkers, that’s for sure. I’ve had people call me, and email me, and write to me, and threatened me, and yell at me, and follow me home. And that is why the spotlight is so fascinating to me––how reporters are so vulnerable because people know who they are. And how do you keep a secret when the spotlight is always on you.
My producer is incredible. She and I have worked together for 18 years. Can you believe it? And we have won two dozen Emmys together! We are a great team. But interestingly although we are dear friends professionally, we do not do anything together personally. And that is portrayed very realistically in the book.
Q. ADAPTATION: For fun, do you have any cast of stars in mind for any of your leading roles for movie or TV series?
HANK: Tea Leoni for Lily! David Tennant for Banning. I’d love for Cassie to be Taylor Swift–– Wouldn’t that be fun? And Greer… seems like Sarah Paulson to me.

HANK:
- The Emmy award ceremony is authentically described, including the photographers.
- “Night night, love and Penguins” is a phrase I made up.
- My sister Nancy is a chef, and she taught me about bouillabaisse.
- The riverbank where Sam and Rowen read is a real place, and so is the Aquarium.
- I own the dress Lily is wearing in the opening scene of chapter one.
Q. UPCOMING: What is next for you in ten words or less or less? (Or more)
HANK: Money changes everything–– That’s what friends are for. Watch for HER NEW BEST FRIEND in September 2022. (Yikes! Better get back to the manuscript!)
